Insight 4 - Thoughts and Emotions have a Spiritual Dimension
Our thoughts and emotions have a spiritual dimension
Through the workings of the brain, we are able to do absolutely astounding and miraculous things. We are able to view or conjure up in our mind’s eye sights and sounds and scenes and events and thoughts and smells, and even feelings and emotions, as well as millions of facts collected over years of life’s experience and study. We are able to visualise letters and figures and can creatively imagine all kinds of forms not yet existing and about to be made. It is probably true to say that our life’s primary occupation is with the world of our thoughts and emotions.
While some thoughts and emotions may affect us physically, our world of thoughts and emotions is essentially intangible and non-physical. In fact, a search of the brain will fail to detect any physical resemblance to anything seen or perceived so vividly in our world of thoughts and emotion. There will be no photographs of the scenes we recall, no recordings of the music whose memory enthrals us, and no trace or suggestion of the emotion of love we experience so intensely. It would appear that through our physical brain we are in fact connected to a spiritual world – the world of our thoughts and emotions (1) . We are truly both physical and spiritual. COVID 19 On 31 July 2020, at the age of 77, I was tested and later declared Covid positive on Saturday night, 1 August. Apart from feeling ill, I then experienced a feeling of utter, and completely overwhelming weakness. I spent days in hospital, eight in ICU, my life in dire danger. Into that void of suffering stepped numerous anxious and diligent and dedicated doctors and nurses, all absolutely resolutely fighting to help save my life, even at the grave risk of their own personal safety. They came with their skills and with their knowledge and they came with their love. They came with medication and technology, all designed to help to cure human suffering. Into that void of suffering there entered too a veritable flood of intense love and concern of family and friends, and often also the intense love and concern of mere acquaintances. I was infused and enveloped in a cloud of love so intense that it was as real as is every days’ miraculously rising sun. As a Judge of 54 years of experience of litigation, involving deciding painstakingly and carefully what is true, and what is false, I say that that cloud of love was not physical. No scientist who has ever lived, however skilled and inventive, could create in a laboratory of merely physical ingredients the miraculous reality I experienced so vividly and clearly. I say, as an objective adjudicator of truth and falsity, that what I experienced was a deeply profound and deeply meaningful experience of a spiritual reality that was entirely non-physical, and that for anyone to argue the converse is not only utterly false but also utterly absurd. My profound spiritual experience proved God’s existence overwhelmingly and beyond a reasonable doubt. (1) See below Ethical Will
